Attic Venting

What is included, and how it goes.

A North Texas attic in July can reach well past 140 degrees. That heat bakes shingles from underneath, shortens their life and pushes more load onto the air conditioning below. Proper attic ventilation lets hot, moist air escape and draws cooler air in, which is why shingle manufacturers tie their warranties to it.

Ventilation works as a system with two halves. Intake vents low on the roof, usually in the soffits, let outside air in. Exhaust vents high on the roof, ridge vents, turtle vents, turbines or powered fans, let hot air out. When the two are out of balance, or when soffit vents have been blocked by insulation, the attic traps heat and moisture no matter how many vents are on top.

The Difference

Worth knowing before you decide.

Our attic venting service starts with evaluating what the attic has and where it falls short. From there we recommend the intake and exhaust types and placement that suit the roof, and install or replace ridge vents, soffit vents, gable vents and powered attic fans.

Mixing exhaust types is a common mistake. A powered fan next to a ridge vent can pull air in through the ridge instead of the soffits, short-circuiting the whole system. Choosing one exhaust approach and sizing it to the intake avoids that.

Moisture is the other half of the story. Bathroom fans and dryer vents that exhaust into the attic, and winter condensation on the underside of the decking, can lead to mold and rot. Venting the attic properly helps keep the decking dry.

The best time to fix ventilation is during a roof replacement, when the decking is exposed and a ridge vent can be cut in cleanly. It can also be done on its own on an existing roof.

Before You Call

Attic Venting, answered.

How do I know if my attic is poorly ventilated?

Signs include an attic that feels far hotter than outside air, upstairs rooms that stay hot, shingles aging early, and moisture or dark staining on the underside of the decking.

Is a ridge vent better than turtle vents?

A continuous ridge vent usually exhausts more evenly, but either can work when it is balanced with enough soffit intake.

Can I add ventilation without replacing the roof?

Yes. Vents can be added or replaced on an existing roof, though a replacement is the easiest time to do it.

Does ventilation affect my shingle warranty?

Most shingle manufacturers require adequate attic ventilation for their warranty to hold.
